The Sprit of Communities
Even through times were hard the miners used to look after their own, one case in particular was the disaster fund set up for a disaster in the Burradon Colliery' Northumberland on the 2nd March 1860. There were 76 deaths.
The colliery must be at least 25 miles from the Newbottle Collieries, but the men still give. There was a list produced of those giving and those that did not, it might well have been they were not present or the more likely they had no money to give.
